Explain why you chose the book you did/ How does society affect individuals.

The book I chose was “11 Birthdays.” The main reason I chose this book was because of the cover. When covers really stick out to me, it pops up into my mind that they are probably pretty good book. Unless the book is about something more strictly related to guy stories, biographies or anything science fictional usually isn’t my type. I really like books made after movies. Whether or not if I have seen the movie, if I liked the movie usually the book will be good, or else if the cover looks interesting as well as the title, it pops out.

This book shows how society affects an individual for example how the girl and boy keep meeting up with each other every year. Why does the author stop at 11 years old though? The last year they meet up with each other is when they turn 11 years old and after that don’t see each other. It affects the characters because they obviously know something is up. It’s really the author messing with the audience in real life. I think all of the readers are wondering when their next going to meet up. And I predict that they will end up meeting up together when they get way older towards the end of the book.

Blogging Prompt 4- Author & Research

Blogging Prompt 4- Author & Research

The author of the book I am independently reading is Wendy Mass.  In a biography of Mass it noted how she w as Born 1967, in Livingston, NJ. She got her Education from Tufts University (English); California State University at Long Beach, (English); Drew University, doctor of letters degree. She was a Writer. She worked variously for a literary agent, a television casting company, as a script reader for a film producer, and as a book editor at publishing houses in New York, NY, and CT.

After graduating from Tufts University with a degree in English, Mass moved to Los Angeles, California, to work in the entertainment industry. She later attended graduate school, where she made the decision to write for children and young adults. Moving back east, where she began her career in publishing, Mass was soon afforded the opportunity to write nonfiction. The book 11 Birthdays she published in 2009 was not nonfiction, though. Considering it is about magical dreams and wishes coming true!

Predictions on F451

Because of over the Thanksgiving Break, I read A Lot of Fahrenheit 451. Some predictions I have for the book is obviously I feel like something will happen with the whole books issue! Montag just recently stole a book from a previous night while setting a fire. That is basically illegal where they live so his wife wants nothing to do with him having books around her house because of the fact Captain Beatty was in their house the other Day checking up on Montag while he was “sick”. I think in the end the both of them will get in trouble with the government. I also think something will enter about Clarisse. She entered so quickly and left very quickly also.

A future plot event I think will happen in the story might be where the society realizes preventing people from reading, might end up as a stupid idea. It seems as though some of the actual citizens are catching on to it.  I did have some questions within the book like: why is Mildred so obsessed with tv shows?? And why is Montag acting so sick, while preventing to go to work? I also didn’t get where in the scene of the fire where Montag stole a book what happened to Captain Beatty during that time, casue it said a lot about him but it confused me a lot.

This is an article on how in  Wales people are actually Burning Books in real life!! Crazy to think about How Ray Bradbury made that prediction.

Here is a link i forgot to include in the last post. It talks about a summary of the book 11 Birthdays.
11 Birthdays Summary

Intro to plot

In the book I am reading, 11 birthdays, By Wendy Mass it starts off as when the main character Amanda meets another boy while she is being born. Somehow every year faith brings them together to be met again on the day of their birth. Neither of them realized it. I am only 2 chapters into the book so far and I think it’s really good! The author uses lots of sophisticated words as well as lots of details. Like on their 10th birthday how they both got reunited, during the birthday party coincidentally.

A prediction I have for the book is I think that because the books called 11 birthdays, I believe something will happen to the both of them on their 11th birthday. Since I’m only 2 chapters into the book, right now they just turned 10 years old. I predict something like they will end up having to spend every birthday together from now on, or else maybe get separated and somehow meet each other every year. I think the two of them will end up getting married or something.  And they will be together for the rest of their birthdays. But I think something will end up happening to them by the end of the story. Probably on their birthday.

Post 1
For my first post of the 2nd blog, I will discuss how the book I read in the previous trimester called “My life in Pink and Green”. I really enjoyed the book. I would recommend it to teenage girls. It deals with real life situations involving girls. Because of these situations throughout the story, it makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens to the girls in the end. Also the thing that interested me in reading the book was the cover. I really liked the colors!
The setting in this book was in an older part of town located in a small city. The book had a lot of drama which made people want to read it. I would probably rate the book I read a 4.5.  I think the author might of written it from a previous situation that could’ve occurred in her life. Maybe she learned from a lesson.

English Final Blog Reflections-

Part 1 – The blog I think best exemplifies my ability to analyze complex characters ,theme, and cite strong, textual evidence would probably be this blog: http://lexireadingblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/analysis-lucy-desberg-is-12-year-old.html#comment-form

One reason why I believe this is the best is because I gave a really thorough description on throughout the story what I felt the main points were. I included a couple really good quotes throughout when I was reading I really enjoyed them. I felt they really bring out the really exquisite ideas leading to the development towards the theme. I also deeply explained the quotes and how I Intereprated them. Though to me a sentence could mean something different from what someone else thinks. I also included page numbers to point out where I found the text. Proof my blog meets the expectations to the rubric is that in the rubric it says “The student cites strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.” And I feel throughout my example blog post I did everything it was asking me to!

Part 2/Choice 1- A goal I have for next trimester in my reading is to complete about 2 more books than I did this tri. I think it would be easier to compare books to each other and say I have read more in that little bit of time. For writing I would like to think about improving my writing skills like maybe learning new vocabulary to sound more sophisticated. An area I want to improve next trimester in reading would be to read more over a smaller amount of time like every night improve the pages or chapters I read. An area I want to improve in my writing is learning to make my papers longer maybe by using words in paragraphs to make them longer.

Choice 2-Something I struggled with in the experience was coming up with so many different subjects to talk about within the one story. Because there’s only so much you can talk about with one subject in the book.  I overcame through the struggle by just looking through the book and finding more evidence I could prove my topic on and explain about it. One strength I had with blogging was talking about the book because I absolutely loved the book and understood it completely.  An example is: http://lexireadingblog.blogspot.com/2013/09/blog-post-6-overview-onmy-book-right.html#comment-form

Because it shows I understood it very well.
A summary for the last chapter in this book is that themayor finally gave Lucy the chance to open her renovated store. They had a bunch of renovations done to the shop and added a lot of very cool food and make up. All the girls came in and thought lucy was very cool. Her family all came together and united and was loving. They alos got a ouse together when her sister came home. The school thought very proud of lucy.
ThemeandSummary

I beleive the theme for this book is that: When pushing for something in life, you should use the best of your ability to compelte the job or acitivty you are trying to do. MAking a difference in that thing you are trying to do can really impact yours or someone esles life. When lucy wanted to helpher family out within the story and the pharmacy, she didnt quit she always kept going and asking for new ways to help people and always on task.

Analysis

Lucy Desberg is a 12 year old girl who opens the family mail and realizes they are about to lose their pharmacy. Business isn't good anymore because people are going to big box stores to purchase groceries and fill their prescriptions at the same time. One of her hobbies is playing around with and applying makeup on her older sister. Eventually she decides to use these skills to help the young girls in her town look beautiful for the school dances, weddings and special events. One important line, "I don't like it when people say makeup makes you prettier. That's not really true. Makeup can make you feel a little better about yourself" (p. 94) rang true. The high school girls nick name Lucy the makeup goddess. At this same time Lucy joins the Earth Club at her school and begins thinking about convincing her family to turn the business into a green pharmacy. She also begins researching eco spas and dreams of opening one next door to the pharmacy. Eventually with the help of her older sister she fills out a "Going Green Grant" for local small businesses to see if her dream can become a reality. A quote Lucy says is “Im very thankful for everyone who has helped me along with trying to get this going grant, but most importantly I couldn’t of done with without my sister for giving me all the help even though she iso far away from our family!” (Greenwald, 264)

Analysis- Ex. Quote from page 26 . “Claudia… No one expects you to do that.  I think this quote is explaining how she is such a caring person. I can infer from the text that it means Lisa is very kind and isn’t forcing her sister to do whatever she doesn’t want to do. Even though she wants her sister to help her its what her sister wants. She also says on page 54, “No, that wouldn’t be necessary.. you don’t need to do that for me honey.” From her mom’s point of view.

Book Recommendations

This is the cover of the book and what it looks like. I would recommend this book to young/teenage girls because its about learning girl tricks and ideas. IT focuses on makeup and dates and dances. And the daily troubles that a girl goes through. Also about going through middle and high school with friends, grades, activities, etc. Also  I think moms could read this or older women because it still relates to the whole girly factor. I don’t think boys would like it at all very much.

Blog post 6

Overview on my book right now

Currently in my book where I am at, Lucy gets a lot of hope from her fellow classmates. They all like to go hang out at the pharmacy now. With all her new improvements it makes it a fun environment to hang out at. She gains more popularity and people start loving Lucy. After her homecoming dance tons of girls start calling Lucy to ask her to do their make up for various ideas like weddings and school and just tips on her make up.  Lucy mom is very proud of her daughter when she finds out about it all and ends up gaining more respect as well For Lucy too!

For the 4th blog post i will acknowledge how Lucy ended up joining the club with her best friend Sunny. They recycle afte rschool and it makes Lucy want even more the spa with a going green kind of theme. She does research on how she could make the spa go environmentally clean and proposes an idea to the club leader/teacher. LAter on Sunnys parents have an extra recliner/massage chair they end up giving to Lucy who makes room for it in her spa. She lets customers use it and they love it!
On my third blog post i am going to talk about how far i am into my book so far. I recently read how the main charcter Lucy wanrts to sign up for the going green project. She doesnt know how do get enetered into the contest becasue her mom is too busy to care about saving the spa when she is just barely trying to get by with the bills.  So Lucy talks it over with her sister and gets ideas for the spa. Then when the homecoming queen came into her spaasking Lucy to do her make up for homecoming she thught she would give it a try. She ended up loving it and told all her friends to come and get their make up done by Lucy, later on making Lucy famous in their town with all the people loving her and bringing lots of money to her pharmacy!

2nd Blog Post, Characters. Some Characters in my book are: Lucy, who is 12 years old and has a problem with her moms store in wanting in to be more green and environmentally friendly. Her mom who is running low on money does not like the idea too well. Her husband divroeced her and took a lot of the money and moved a couple hours away. Lucys older sister moved off to college so she texts her in order to helpl her with the city councils town newspaper contest she wants to get involved in. These charcters end up changing throughout the story when they meet new people, talk to people about the homecoming make up, and also Meeting the homecoming queen and her turning ou to like lucy. Lucy interacts with others to  find out more about mkae up and teach others to emply environmentally freindly make up. Her sisters friends end up going a spa like lucy is imagining, making her wanting to improve the spa even more. Lucys characters advances the plot by making sure she keeps pushing her mom into entering the contest and invloving the towns people in it.
The book im reading is called My life in Pink and Green byLisa Greenwald. I m a couple chapters into this book which i have started recently. I preditct it to be about a 12 year old girl who has a lonely life at sometimes which ends up having something unrealisitic or that ther main charcater Lucy would not expect. I also predict she will find a boy that maybe she would like or something casue it talks about her bestfriend and how she has a twin so maybe they might become together or something. I think shes going to be like a leader in the story of some sort becasue of ho wshe is being described, she sounds pretty energetic, herous and out going. Some questions i have are: How and what led her into being so interested in the make up industry? What will end up happening with her and possibly a boy? And how did she find the letter for the towns contest in going green online? Text to world: Lucy wants to change the spa her family owns to more of an enviromentally friendly station. Text to text: This book reminds me of the book Caring Is Creepy because the main character is both a girl who  throughout the book ends up finding her self out more and learning everything can be looked in a good way not always in negativity. Text to self: This book relates to me because of a young girl who likes to help people out, make a change and inspire others.
